Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as): Verily matters are of three types: a matter whose rectitude is evident and thus must be acted upon, a matter whose error is evident and thus must be avoided, and an obscure matter whose knowledge is referred to Allah and His messenger (s). The Prophet (s) said, The lawful is evidently clear, and the unlawful is evidently clear, and obscurities fall between these two. He who abandons obscure matters is saved from the prohibited things, whereas one who delves into obscurities ends up committing prohibited acts and perishes whence he knows not. al-Kāfī
