Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as)

وَ الذُّنُوبُ الَّتِي تُنْزِلُ الْبَلَاءَ تَرْكُ إِغَاثَةِ الْمَلْهُوفِ وَ تَرْكُ مُعَاوَنَةِ الْمَظْلُومِ وَ تَضْيِيعُ الْأَمْرِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَ النَّهْيِ عَنِ الْمُنْكَر … وَ الذُّنُوبُ الَّتِي تَقْطَعُ الرَّجَاءَ الْيَأْسُ مِنْ رَوْحِ اللَّهِ وَ الْقُنُوطُ مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللَّهِ وَ الثِّقَةُ بِغَيْرِ اللَّهِ وَ التَّكْذِيبُ بِوَعْدِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَل .‏

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as)

لِأَهْلِ الْإِيمَانِ أَرْبَعُ عَلَامَاتٍ وَجْهٌ مُنْبَسِطٌ وَ لِسَانٌ لَطِيفٌ وَ قَلْبٌ رَحِيمٌ وَ يَدٌ مُعْطِيَةٌ.

The believers can be distinguished through four signs: a cheerful face, a gentle tongue, a merciful heart, and a giving hand.’

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as)

لَا تُبْدِي‏ الشَّمَاتَةَ لِأَخِيكَ؛ فَيَرْحَمَهُ اللَّهُ، وَ يُصَيِّرَهَا بِكَ». وَ قَالَ: «مَنْ شَمِتَ بِمُصِيبَةٍ نَزَلَتْ بِأَخِيهِ، لَمْ يَخْرُجْ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا حَتّى‏ يُفْتَتَنَ.

Do not express malicious gloating at your brother [for a sin or misfortune] for Allah will have mercy on him as a result and make it befall ...

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as)

يَا ابْنَ جُنْدَبٍ إِنَّمَا شِيعَتُنَا يُعْرَفُونَ بِخِصَالٍ شَتَّى بِالسَّخَاءِ وَ الْبَذْلِ لِلْإِخْوَان.‏

Our followers [Shi’a] are known through various characteristics among which are generosity and giving freely to their fellow brothers.
