Imam Ali (as):
No one is stronger than he who has prevailed over his own self and thus, has it under control, as there is no one weaker than he who, neglecting his own self, has ruined it.

Imam al-Hasan (as):
I wonder at the one who is selective about his food choices but does not care about the food for his soul, so he refrains from the types of food which are detrimental to him but allows into his heart that which will ruin him.

Imam al-Kazim (as):
There is no medicine except that it exacerbates another ailment, and there is nothing more beneficial to the body than self-restraint from all except that which the body needs.

Imam al-Kazim (as):

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
He who is mindful of the fact that God sees him, hears what he says and knows whatever he does whether good or bad and this knowledge keeps him away from evil deeds, then he is [a perfect example of] "the one who is awed to stand before his Lord and restrains his soul from [following] desires."
