Imam Ali (as):
Life in this world consists of two days: one in your favor and the other against you, so when it is in your favor do not exalt in pride, and when it is against you do not grieve.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Whoever abstains from worldly pleasures, Allah will establish wisdom in his heart, make it flow from his tongue, open his eyes to the flaws of the world, its ailment and its remedy, and will take him out of the world safely into the Abode of Peace.

Imam Ali (as):
View this world like an ascetic who has separated himself from it, for it destroys those who have settled in it and and inflicts distress upon the affluent one who feels secure therein, that which has been lost from this world is not hoped to return and that which is yet to come is not known enough to be expected.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Endure [the hardships and temptations of] this world, for it is no more than an hour. What has passed, you will find neither its pain nor its sorrow, and what is yet to come, you do not know what it will be like. The world is the hour in which you live; So be patient, in it, with acts of obedience to Allah, and resist against acts of disobedience to Allah.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
[Consider] your sojourn in this world just as a house that you stayed in and [soon] departed from, or a property that you found in a dream then you awoke and not a thing from it remained with you. I have given you this parable because this world, according to the people of intellect and knowledge of Allah, is just as the shadow in the shade.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
What do I have with this world? The example of me and the world is like a rider who rides on a summer's day, and then goes to take shade under a tree for a while during the day, and then rides on leaving it.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
An angel calls out every day: "O son of Adam, reproduce [children] for death, accumulate [wealth] for annihilation, and construct for destruction."

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
The life of this world is such that one will be held to account for the lawful things one has enjoyed therein, just as one will be punished for the unlawful things thereof.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Be patient with [acts of] obedience to Allah and resist against [acts of] disobedience to Allah, for verily the life of this world is but an hour; as to that which has passed, its joy and grief are gone and as to that which is yet to come, you have no idea how it will turn out. Therefore you should exercise patience in the present hour, for if you do so, it is as if you have spent your entire lifetime in happiness and joy.
