Imam Ali (as):
No one is stronger than he who has prevailed over his own self and thus, has it under control, as there is no one weaker than he who, neglecting his own self, has ruined it.

The Prophet Muhammad (S):
A strong person is not someone who overcomes others, rather a strong person is someone who overcomes his own self.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
The remembrance of death kills [vain] desires in the self, uproots the sources of heedlessness, reassures the heart about Allah’s promises, softens one’s disposition, and breaks the pillars of unlawful] inclinations.

:
There is no strength like that of one who can overcome his base desires... there is no justice like fairness, no transgression like injustice, and no injustice like yielding to one's base desires.

The Prophet Muhammad (S):
Verily the inmates of the Fire will be tormented by the stench of the knowledgeable man who has abandoned his knowledge. The person with the most intense remorse on the Day of Resurrection will be the man who called someone to Allah and he responded to his call, accepted from him, became obedient to Allah and thus Allah admitted him into His paradise, while the caller was made to enter the Fire for abandoning his knowledge and following his whims and desires.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
Paradise is surrounded by trials and patience. So whoever endures trials in the world will enter Paradise. Hell is surrounded by pleasures and desires. Thus, whoever allows himself its pleasures and desires [of the world] will enter the Fire.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Keep your soul away from what harms it before it departs your body, and struggle to set it free [from desire] just as you struggle to earn your livelihood, for verily your soul is hostage to your deed.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Certainly I fear two things for you: chasing your desires and entertaining high expectations. As for chasing the desires, it obstructs one from the truth, and as for [entertaining] high expectations, it causes one to forget the Hereafter.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Be on your guard against your desires as you guard against your enemies, for there is nothing more detrimental to men than following their desires and the consequences of their tongues [i.e. speech].

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
Whoever empowers three things over three other things, is as if he has facilitated the destruction of his intellect: he who darkens the light of his thinking with high hopes, obliterates the beauty of his wisdom with excessive speech and extinguishes the light produced through taking lessons with the lust of his soul is as if he has aided his desire with destroying his intellect, and whoever destroys his intellect corrupts his religion as well as his worldly life.
