The Prophet Muhammad (S):
None is worthy of leadership except for a man who has three characteristics: piety that prevents him from disobeying Allah, clemency with which he controls his anger, and maintaining excellent guardianship towards his people, such that he treats them like a compassionate father.

The Prophet Muhammad (S):
When the verse ‘Today I have perfected your religion for you, and I have completed My favor upon you, and I have approved Islam as your religion.’ was revealed, the prophet (s) said, “’God is greater’ for the perfection of religion, completion of the favor, and the Lord's approval of my mission and Ali’s custodianship after me.’

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Allah will not speak to three types of people on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and there will be a painful punishment for them: one who falsely claims the position of Imama [i.e. Leadership] endorsed by Allah, one who rejects an Imam endorsed by Allah, and one who assumes that these two have any share in Islam.

Imam al-Kazim (as):
Imam al-Kazim (AS) said, 'Imama is the light, and that is the purport of His saying [in the Qur'an]: "So have faith in Allah and His Apostle and the light which We have sent down". He (AS) said, 'The light is the Imam.'

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
A dead person will be questioned about five things [in his grave]: his prayer, his alms-tax (zakat), his obligatory pilgrimage (hajj), his fasting, and his acceptance of our divine guardianship (wilaya), the ahl al-bayt. Our guardianship will then address the other four from inside the grave, 'If any of you has any deficiency, I will make it up.'

Imam Ali (as):
You certainly know that he who is in charge of the honour, the lives, the booty, [enforcement of] the commandments and the leadership of the Muslims must not be a miser ... nor must he accept bribes in his ruling lest he forfeit people s rights and give them to those who do not deserve them.

Imam al-Reḍa (as):
I heard Abu al-Hasan al-Rida (as) saying, May Allah have mercy on anyone who revives our cause. I asked, How does he revive your cause? He replied, He learns our teachings and teaches them to the people, for verily if people were to know the goodness in our speech, they would follow us.
