Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
The parent's goodness towards his child is [tantamount to] his goodness towards his own parents.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
There are three things regarding which Allah, the Exalted, did not allow any flexibility: returning a trust to its owner, be he good or wicked; keeping one's pact with both the good and the wicked; and kindness to one's parents whether they be good or wicked.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
What prevents one among you from doing good to his parents, be them alive or dead? Such that he performs prayers, gives charity, performs Hajj, and fasts on their behalf, in which case he has both done good to them and will also have the same reward for himself, and Allah will multiply his reward for his righteousness and goodness.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
Verily a man is obedient to his parents during their lifetime, then after they die, he does not repay their debts nor does he seek God's forgiveness for them, therefore God records him as being insolent. And a man is insolent to his parents and not good to them during their lifetime, but after their death he repays their debts and seeks forgiveness for them, therefore God records him as being righteous [and good to his parents].

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
He who looks at his parents with hatred, even if [it is because] they have been unjust to him, Allah will not accept a single prayer from him.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
We seek refuge in Allah from the sins which hasten one's destruction, make death nigh and empty the lands. These sins are: cutting off ties with one's kin, insolence [to one's parents] and abandoning the performance of kind acts.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Had there been anything less disrespectful than saying 'fie' [to one's parents], Allah would have forbidden it, and so it is the lowest level of insolence. Insolence also includes a man's looking at his parents with a sharp gaze.

Note: This hadith is in reference to the verse where Allah says, 'Your Lord has decreed that you shall not worship anyone except Him, and [He has enjoined] kindness to parents. Should any of them or both reach old age at your side, do not say to them, ‘Fie!’ And do not chide them, but speak to them noble words.';

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
'On the Day of Resurrection, one of the veils of paradise will be removed and every living being will be able to smell its breeze from a distance of five hundred years except for one specific group of people.' I asked, 'Who are they?' The Imam replied, 'Those who have been insolent to their parents. '

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

Imam al-Reḍa (as):
I said to Imam al-Ridha (as), 'Can one pray for their parents if they are not acquainted with the right path [they do not adhere to Islam or Shi'ism]?' The Imam replied, 'One must pray for them and give charity on their behalf [if they are dead] and if they are alive and are not acquainted with the right path, one must still treat them with gentleness, as the prophet (s) said, 'Verily God sent me with [the message of] mercy and not with insolence [to one's parents].'
