الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):
ما مِن قَلبٍ إلاّ و لَهُ اُذُنانِ : على إحداهُما مَلَكٌ مُرشِدٌ ، و علَى الاُخرى شَيطانٌ مُفَتِّنٌ ، هذا يَأمُرُهُ و هذا يَزجُرُهُ ، الشَّيطانُ يَأمُرُهُ بالمَعاصي و المَلَكُ يَزجُرُهُ عَنها ، و هُو قولُ اللّهِ عَزَّ و جلَّ : «عَنِ اليَمينِ و عَنِ الشِّمالِ قَعيدٌ * ما يَلفِظُ مِن قَولٍ إلاّ لَدَيْهِ رَقيبٌ عَتيدٌ».
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Every single heart has two ears; at one of them stands a guiding angel, and at the other stands a deceiving devil. One commands him and the other prevents him; the devil commands him to sin and the angel prevents him from it, and that is the meaning of Allah's verse in the Quran: "When the two receivers receive, sitting on the right and on the left. Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record]."

الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):
إنَّ أبغَضَ خَلقِ اللّهِ عبدٌ اتّقَى النّاسُ لِسانَهُ.
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
The person most despised from among Allah's creatures is a man whose [sharp] tongue people are wary of.

الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):
مِن النّاسِ مَن رِزقُهُ في التّجارةِ ، و مِنهُم مَن رِزقُهُ في السَّيف ، و مِنهُم مَن رِزقُهُ في لِسانِهِ .
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
There are some people whose sustenance lies in trading, some whose sustenance is in sword and others whose sustenance is secured through their tongue.

عَلَى العاقِلِ أن يَكونَ عارِفا بِزَمانِهِ ، مُقبِلاً عَلى شَأنِهِ ، حافِظا لِلِسانِهِ .

The man of intellect must be well aware of the times he lives in, attentive of his affairs and guarding of his tongue.

الإمام الكاظم (عليه السَّلام):
الإمامُ الكاظمُ عليه السلام ـ لِرَجُلٍ قـالَ لَـهُ : أوصِني ـ : اِحفَظْ لِسانَكَ تَعِزَّ ، و لا تُمَكِّنِ النّاسَ مِن قِيادِكَ فتَذِلَّ رَقبَتُكَ .
Imam al-Kazim (as):
Imam al-Kazim (as) said to a man who asked him for advice: Guard your tongue and you will gain honour, and do not hand your control over to people lest you be abased.

كُونُوا دُعاةً إلى أنفُسِكُم بغَيرِ ألسِنَتِكُم ، و كُونُوا زَينا و لا تَكُونوا شَينا .

Draw people to yourselves with other than your tongues [through your actions and conduct]. Be an adornment for us [amongst people] and not a disgrace to us.

الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):
كُونُوا دُعاةً لِلنّاسِ بِغَيرِ ألسِنَتِكُم ، لِيَرَوا مِنكُمُ الوَرعَ و الاجتِهادَ و الصَّلاةَ و الخَيرَ ، فإنَّ ذلكَ داعِيَةٌ .
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Invite people to what is good with other than your tongues, so that they see in you piety, tenacity, diligence in prayer and goodness, for this is enough to invite them to goodness.

الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):
مَنْ لَقِيَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ بِوَجْهَيْنِ وَ لِسَانَيْنِ، جَاءَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَ لَهُ لِسَانَانِ مِنْ نَارٍ.
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
He who meets his fellow Muslims two-facedly and hypocritically [lit. having two-tongues] will be raised on the Day of Resurrection with two tongues of Fire.
