Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
The prosperous one is he who sets aside some alone time every day in which he is preoccupied with his own self [takes account of his self, makes an assessment of his deeds and his relationship with God and His creatures].

The Prophet Muhammad (S):
The most sagacious of the sagacious is he who takes account of himself and works for that which comes after death, and the stupidest of the stupid is he who allows himself to follow his desires and entertains false expectations from Allah.

Imam Ali (as):
He who takes account of himself will identify his defects and encompass his sins. He will repent for the sins and amend the defects.

Imam al-Kazim (as):
The one who does not take account of himself every single day is not one of us. And when doing so, if he comes across a good deed he has done, he should thank Allah and ask Him to grant him the ability to do more, and if he has committed an evil deed, he must seek Allah s forgiveness and repent.

Imam al-Sajjad (as):
O son of Adam! You will continue to thrive as long as you are the admonisher of your self, and as long as accounting for yourself is one of your concerns.
