:
"Jesus (PBUH) said: O Apostles! How many lanterns have been extinguished by the wind and how many devoted servants of God have been destroyed by self-pride!"

Imam Ali (as):
He who restricts himself to what is just sufficient for maintenance has secured comfort and leads a carefree life. Desire is the key to grief and the conveyance of distress. Greed, vanity, and jealousy are incentives to falling into sins.

Imam Ali (as):
How, O son of Adam, are you entitled to conceit? You began as a drop of semen and will end as a rotting corpse. You cannot sustain your life, nor can you fight off your death.

Imam Ali (as):
There are two things in which no one should place their trust: health and wealth, for you see a man healthy one day and suddenly, he is taken ill. And you see a man wealthy one day and suddenly he loses all his money.

Imam Ali (as):
Imam Ali (AS) said to a man soliciting advice from him, 'Do not be like the one who... regards the sins of others as big but considers the same things for himself as small; if he does something in obedience to Allah he considers it much but if others do the same he considers it small; he, therefore, rebukes others but flatters himself; entertainment in the company of the wealthy is dearer to him than remembrance (of Allah) with the poor.'

Imam Ali (as):
Imam Ali (AS) said to a man soliciting advice from him, 'Do not be like the one who... for others, he is afraid of small sins, but for himself, he expects more reward than his performance. If he grows rich, he becomes self-conceited and falls into vice; if he falls poor he despairs and becomes weak.

Imam Ali (as):
Imam Ali (AS) said to a man soliciting advice from him, 'Do not be like the one who... when he recovers from an illness, he feels vain about himself; when he is afflicted, he loses hope; if distress befalls him he prays like a bewildered man; and when he finds ease of life he falls into deceit and turns his face away...'

Imam Ali (as):
Imam Ali (AS) said to a man soliciting advice from him, 'Do not be like the one who … dislikes death because of the numerous sins he has committed but still continues to perpetrate that for which he dislikes death. If he falls ill, he is remorseful, and once he regains health, he feels secure and indulges in amusements...'
