"Jesus (PBUH) said: O Apostles! How many lanterns have been extinguished by the wind and how many devoted servants of God have been destroyed by self-pride!"

Imam Ali (as):
Life in this world consists of two days: one in your favor and the other against you, so when it is in your favor do not exalt in pride, and when it is against you do not grieve.

Imam al-Kazim (as):
Self-admiration [‘Ujb] has stages, some of which are: when a person’s evil deed is made to seem fair to him so he views it as good and is impressed by it and thinks that he is doing well. [Another stage is] when a person comes to believe in his Lord and considers it a favour to Allah, Mighty and Exalted, while it is Allah who has done him a favour [by guiding him to faith].

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
There are two angels in the heavens appointed for God's servants, and they elevate those who humble themselves for God and degrade those who are haughty.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
He who degrades a believer and scorns him for his poverty or lack of means, Allah, most High, will publicly disgrace him on the day of judgment.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Certainly I fear two things for you: chasing your desires and entertaining high expectations. As for chasing the desires, it obstructs one from the truth, and as for [entertaining] high expectations, it causes one to forget the Hereafter.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
I asked Imam al-Sadiq (as) about arrogance, and he replied: 'The gravest form of arrogance in when you debase the truth and look down upon people.' I asked: 'And how does one debase the truth?' He replied: 'By being ignorant about the truth and vilifying its people.'

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
O David, Just as the closest of people to Allah are the humble ones, likewise the most distant of people to Allah are the arrogant ones.
