احْذَرْ قِلَّةَ الزَّادِ وَ أَكْثِرْ مِنَ الِاسْتِعْدَادِ تَسْعَدْ بِرِحْلَتِكَ .

Beware of having little provision [for the journey of the Hereafter] and increase your readiness and you will depart this world victorious.

الكافي عن أبي عَمرو الشَّيباني : رَأيتُ أبا عَبدِ اللّهِ عليه السلام وَ بِيَدِهِ مِسحاةٌ وَ عَلَيهِ إزارٌ غَليظٌ يَعمَلُ في حائِطٍ لَهُ وَ العَرَقُ يَتَصابُّ عَن ظَهرِهِ فَقُلتُ :جُعلتُ فِداكَ أعطِني أكفِكَ فَقالَ لي : إنّي أُحِبُّ أن يَتَأذَّي الرَّجُلُ بِحَرِّ الشَّمسِ في طَلَبِ المَعيشَةِ .

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

Abu Amr al-Shaybani narrated, 'I saw Aba Abdillah (AS) with a spade in his hand and wearing thick clothes, working in his yard with sweat dripping from his back. I stepped forward and said, 'May I be your ransom, allow me to work in your place.' He replied, 'Verily I love for a man [myself] to bear the sun's heat in the quest for a living.'

أعْطُوا اللّهَ مِن أنفُسِكُم الاجْتِهادَ في طاعَتِهِ؛ فإنَّ اللّهَ لا يُدرَكُ شَيءٌ مِن الخَيرِ عِندَه إلاّ بطاعَتِهِ و اجْتِنابِ مِحارِمِهِ .

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

Exert yourselves diligently in Allah’s obedience, for what is with Allah can only ever be attained through His obedience and refraining from what He has prohibited.

عنه عليه السلام ـ و قد قالَ لَهُ مُعاذُ بنُ كثيرٍ: إنّي قد أيْسَرتُ، فأدَعُ التِّجارةَ ؟ ـ : إنّكَ إنْ فَعَلتَ قَلَّ عقلُكَ ـ أو نحوه ـ .

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

Muadh b. Kathir asked Imam al-Sadiq (as): 'Now that I have become rich, do I give up trading?' To which the Imam replied: 'If you do that, your intellect will diminish.'
