[لِرَجُلٍ سَأَلَهُ أَنْ يَعِظَهُ لَا تَكُنْ مِمَّنْ] يُقَصِّرُ إِذَا عَمِلَ وَ يُبَالِغُ إِذَا سَأَلَ إِنْ عَرَضَتْ لَهُ شَهْوَةٌ أَسْلَفَ الْمَعْصِيَةَ وَ سَوَّفَ التَّوْبَةَ وَ إِنْ عَرَتْهُ مِحْنَةٌ انْفَرَجَ عَنْ شَرَائِطِ الْمِلَّةِ
Imam Ali (as):
Imam Ali (AS) said to a man soliciting advice from him, 'Do not be like the one who... falls short when acting but goes too far when begging; when passion overtakes him he is quick in committing sin and delays repentance; if hardship befalls him, he goes beyond the cannons of the (Islamic) community.

There are two angels in the heavens appointed for God's servants, and they elevate those who humble themselves for God and degrade those who are haughty.

إِنَّمَا أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمُ اثْنَتَيْنِ‏: اتِّبَاعَ الْهَوى‏ وَ طُولَ الْأَمَلِ؛ أَمَّا اتِّبَاعُ الْهَوى‏، فَإِنَّهُ يَصُدُّ عَنِ الْحَقِّ؛ وَ أَمَّا طُولُ الْأَمَلِ، فَيُنْسِي‏ الْآخِرَةَ.
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Certainly I fear two things for you: chasing your desires and entertaining high expectations. As for chasing the desires, it obstructs one from the truth, and as for [entertaining] high expectations, it causes one to forget the Hereafter.

إذا كانَ القَومُ ثَلاثَةً فلا يَتَناجى مِنهُمُ اثنانِ دُونَ صاحِبِهِما ؛ فإنّ ذلكَ (مِـ)مّا يَحزُنُهُ و يُؤذيهِ .
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
When there is a group consisting of three people, two of them must not converse to each other confidentially leaving out the third one, for this would make him sad and irritated.

It is surprising to see an arrogant and proud person who yesterday was but a sperm and tomorrow will be but a carcass.

مَن جَعَلَ مُلكَهُ خادِما لدِينِهِ انقادَ لَهُ ‏كلُّ سُلطانٍ، مَن جَعَلَ دِينَهُ خادِما لمُلكِهِ طَمِعَ فيهِ كلُّ إنسانٍ.
Imam Ali (as):
Whoever makes his sovereignty subservient to his religion, all rulers will submit to him. And whoever makes his religion subservient to his sovereignty then all people will become greedy for it [i.e. his sovereignty].
