The Prophet Muhammad (S):
People are of two types; the first type consists of those who relieve [others] and the second type are those who are relieved; as for the one who is relieved, it is the believer whose death relieves him and sets him free of the world and its ordeals. And as for the one who relieves others, it is the disbeliever in whose death the trees, the animals and many of the people find relief.

Imam Ali (as):
A servant will never savour the taste of faith until he knows that that which afflicts him would never have missed him, and that that which has missed him would never have touched him, and that the only One to induce harm and benefit is Allah, Mighty and Exalted.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, in the presence of Sadir, 'When Allah loves a servant, He immerses him completely in ordeal. O Sadir! We and you are in it day and night.'

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
Allah, the Exalted, brings trial to the believer as a man brings his family a gift upon returning from a trip; and He denies him this world as a doctor puts a patient on diet. An Introduction to Positive Psychology and Its Correlation with Islamic Psychology

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
One who precedes in supplication [prays frequently and not just when in trouble] his supplication is answered when a calamity befalls him, and the angels say: "This voice is familiar to us and is not veiled from reaching the heaven." In contrast, one who does not precede in supplication [and only remembers Allah in times of hardship], his supplication is not answered when a disaster strikes him and the angels say: "We do not recognize this voice."

Imam al-Kazim (as):
I heard Imam Musa al-Kazim (as) say: "Verily supplication wards off what has been decreed as well as what has not yet been decreed." I said: "I understood the part about what has been decreed, but how does supplication ward off something that has not even been decreed yet?" The Imam replied: "So that it world not befall the supplicant."

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Allah has not secured the believer from distress in the world, rather, He has secured him from (spiritual) blindness in it, and from misery in the hereafter.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
Paradise is surrounded by trials and patience. So whoever endures trials in the world will enter Paradise.
