Imam Ali (as):
If someone makes a great deal out of small trials, God will afflict him with large ones.

Imam Ali (as):
Don’t suppose even the best of this community secure against God’s punishment, for the Almighty says, «Only losers feel secure against God’s reckoning». Don’t suppose that even the worst of this community is without hope of receiving God’s grace, for the Almighty says, «Only unbelievers despair of God’s grace.»

Imam Ali (as):
People! Let God see you vigilant in times of ease, just as he sees you wary in times of hardship. Whoever fails to see the test when his hands fill with blessings is complacent about the impending terror. Whoever fails to see the trial when his hands straiten, squanders the reward he could have received.

Imam Ali (as):
At the extremity of hardship comes relief, and at the tightening of the chains of tribulation comes ease.

Imam Ali (as):
[Giving condolences to Ash'ath ibn Qays on the death of his son, Imam Ali (AS) said:] O Ash'ath, your son (when he lived) gave you happiness while, at the same time, he was a trial and hardship and (when he died) he grieved you while, at the same time, he has proved a source of reward and mercy for you

Imam Ali (as):
For every individual about whom people say 'How blessed he is!' there is a severe day waiting for him in this world.

Imam Ali (as):
Many a person approaches Allah’s punishment as a result of His good favor towards him in being ungrateful, and many a person is deluded as a result of Allah’s concealment of his sins, and many a person is captivated by the good things said about him. And Allah does not try anyone with something similar to giving him all the chances [to continue disobeying Him].

The Prophet Muhammad (S):
People are of two types; the first type consists of those who relieve [others] and the second type are those who are relieved; as for the one who is relieved, it is the believer whose death relieves him and sets him free of the world and its ordeals. And as for the one who relieves others, it is the disbeliever in whose death the trees, the animals and many of the people find relief.

Imam Ali (as):
A servant will never savour the taste of faith until he knows that that which afflicts him would never have missed him, and that that which has missed him would never have touched him, and that the only One to induce harm and benefit is Allah, Mighty and Exalted.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
