Jesus (PBUH) said: When a mule is left unridden, unworked, and unloaded for a long time, its nature will change and will become bad-tempered. Hearts are just the same, when they are not softened by the remembrance of death followed by the perseverance of worship, they will become rough and hardened.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
The remembrance of death kills [vain] desires in the self, uproots the sources of heedlessness, reassures the heart about Allah’s promises, softens one’s disposition, and breaks the pillars of unlawful] inclinations.

Imam Ali (as):
Take account of your deeds and oblige yourselves to fulfill what is incumbent upon you, to take from this transient life for the abiding life [of the Hereafter], take provision, and prepare yourselves before you are raised [from your graves for the account].

Imam Ali (as):
Beware of having little provision [for the journey of the Hereafter] and increase your readiness and you will depart this world victorious.

The Prophet Muhammad (S):
People are of two types; the first type consists of those who relieve [others] and the second type are those who are relieved; as for the one who is relieved, it is the believer whose death relieves him and sets him free of the world and its ordeals. And as for the one who relieves others, it is the disbeliever in whose death the trees, the animals and many of the people find relief.

Imam Ali (as):
Revive your heart with exhortations, and kill it will asceticism, strengthen it with conviction, enlighten it with wisdom, subdue it by remembering death, make it acknowledge mortality, make it see the misfortunate of this world.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Imam al-Sadiq (as) with regard to the verse of Allah, ‘So when it reaches the throat [of the dying person], and at that moment you are looking on [at his bedside], and Our angels are nearer to him than you, but you do not see - Then why do you not, if you are not to be recompensed, bring it back, if you should be truthful?’ said, 'When it reaches the throat of the dying person and then he shown his place in Paradise, he says, 'Take me back to the world so I can inform my family of what I see.' Then it will be said to him, 'There is no way for this to happen.'

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Imam al-Sadiq (AS), with regard to Allah's verse in the Qur'an: "Say, 'Indeed the death that you flee will indeed encounter you.", said, 'Years are counted, then months, then days, then hours, then breaths "When their time comes, they shall not defer it by a single hour nor shall they advance it."

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
He who neither knows us [i.e. Ahl al-Bayt] nor rejects us is astray, until he returns to the guidance that Allah has made incumbent upon him - that is the obligatory obedience to us. And if he dies in this deviation of his, Allah will do with him as He pleases.
