“A believer is not a [true] believer until they have three qualities.” This means that these three qualities are effective in completing and perfecting a believer's faith, which is why they are highlighted. One quality must be learnt from Almighty God; another from the Prophet, and another from the authority (ولی), and one must adopt the method (of becoming a true believer) from these three esteemed sources.

“The quality from their Lord is concealing secrets…” You must learn this from your Lord, where you conceal your secrets, but is it only your secrets? No! It is also the secrets of others that must be concealed. Anything that you are aware of as a secret must be concealed. This itself is a code of conduct. Many problems in society, even our own Islamic society, stem from revealing secrets.

“The quality from their Prophet is compliancy (مُدَارَاةِ) with people…” This means to tolerate people, even those who believe in something different than you. Of course, when you need to enjoin the good, do so, and when you need to forbid the wrong, do so. When you need to partake in struggle in the path of God, you must do that as well. There are some who believe in one particular approach, and do not consider any other factors. This is not the method of the religious authorities.

“The quality from their authority is patience at times of comfort or hardship.” Divine saints were patient, and they endured difficulties, whether personal difficulties or public difficulties, like sanctions or other subversions. They would be patient towards these circumstances, facing all obstacles with strength and resilience. This is something we must learn from religious authorities.
