رسول الله (صلی الله علیه و آله):
فَوْقَ كُلِّ ذِي بِرٍّ بِرٌّ حَتّى‏ يُقْتَلَ الرَّجُلُ‏ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ، فَإِذَا قُتِلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ‏ فَلَيْسَ فَوْقَهُ بِرٌّ.
The Prophet Muhammad (S):
Above every good deed there is one which is better, until a man gets killed in the way of Allah. And when a man gets killed in Allah's way then there is no good deed above it.

الإمام الكاظم (عليه السَّلام):
جِهادُ المَرأةِ حُسنُ التَّبَعُّلِ.
Imam al-Kazim (as):
The jihad of a woman is being a good spouse to her husband.

الإمام علي (عليه السَّلام):
املِكوا أنفُسَكُم بدَوامِ جِهادِها.

Rule your souls by continuously struggling with them.

الإمام علي (عليه السَّلام):
غَايَةُ الْمُجَاهَدَةِ أَنْ يُجَاهِدَ الْمَرْءُ نَفْسَهُ.
Imam Ali (as):
The peak of struggling is for one to struggle against his self. …is one's struggle against his self.

الإمام علي (عليه السَّلام):
إنّ المجاهد نفسه على طاعة اللّه و عن معاصيه عند اللّه سبحانه بمنزلة برّ شهيد.
Imam Ali (as):
One who strives to train/ discipline his self in God's obedience, and restrains it from His disobedience, he, in the eyes of God, holds the status of a righteous martyr.

الإمام علي (عليه السَّلام):
ألا و إنّ الجهاد ثمن الجنّة فمن جاهد نفسه ملكها و هي اكرم ثواب اللّه لمن عرفها.
Imam Ali (as):
Indeed, Jihad (i.e. combat against the self) is the price for Paradise, so whosoever combats his self, owns paradise, and it is the most noble reward of God for those who understand its glory.

رسول الله (صلی الله علیه و آله):
لَمّا سُئلَ عنِ الشِّعرِ: إنّ المُؤمِنَ مُجاهِدٌ بِسَيفِهِ ولِسانِهِ، والذي نَفسي بيدِهِ لَكأنّما يَنضِحُونَهم بِالنَّبلِ.
The Prophet Muhammad (S):
The Prophet (s) was once asked about the poets, to which he replied, 'Verily the believer can either fight the enemy with his sword or his tongue, and by the One who has my soul in His Hand, it is as if they [the poets] shower them with arrows [by means of their defamatory poetry].

الإمام السّجاد (عليه السَّلام):
إنْ أخَذْتَ الأسيرَ فعَجَزَ عنِ المَشْيِ ولَم يَكُنْ مَعكَ مَحْمِلٌ فأرْسِلْهُ ولا تَقْتُلْهُ؛ فإنّكَ لا تَدري ما حُكْمُ الإمامِ فيهِ.
Imam al-Sajjad (as):
If you take a captive who then cannot walk further, nor have you a carriage for him, then set him free and do not kill him, for you do not know what would be the Imam s ruling about him.

الإمام علي (عليه السَّلام):
نَهى رسولُ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله أنْ يُلْقى السّمُّ في بِلادِ المُشرِكينَ.
Imam Ali (as):
The Prophet (s) prohibited poisoning the land of the polytheists.

الإمام علي (عليه السَّلام):
أفْضَلُ الجِهادِ مَن جَاهَدَ نَفْسَهُ الّتي بينَ جَنْبَيهِ.
Imam Ali (as):
The best jihad is that of one who combats his own self that is between his two sides.
