Hadiths Of The Rights of a Youngster

الإمام السّجاد (عليه السَّلام):

وَ أَمَّا حَقُّ الصَّغِيرِ فَرَحْمَتُهُ وَ تَثْقِيفُهُ وَ تَعْلِيمُهُ وَ الْعَفْوُ عَنْهُ وَ السَّتْرُ عَلَيْهِ وَ الرِّفْقُ بِهِ وَ الْمَعُونَةُ لَهُ وَ السَّتْرُ عَلَى جَرَائِرِ حَدَاثَتِهِ فَإِنَّهُ سَبَبٌ لِلتَّوْبَةِ وَ الْمُدَارَاةُ لَهُ وَ تَرْكُ مُمَاحَكَتِهِ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ أَدْنَى لِرُشْدِه .‏

Imam al-Sajjad (as):

The right of a youngster is that you should show mercy to him educate him well, teach him and pardon him, cover his faults and treat him gently, help him and conceal the offences of his young age [from others], for this will cause him to repent, you should also treat him amicably and avoid quarreling with him for that is more likely to rectify him.

اِستَرضِعْ لِولدِكَ بِلَبَنِ الحِسانِ ، و إيّاكَ و القِباحَ ؛ فإنّ اللَّبَنَ قد يُعدِي .

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):

Get beautiful wet-nurses to suckle your child and keep away from ugly ones, for verily the milk has an effect [on the child].

اُنظُرُوا مَن تُرضِعُ أولادَكُم؛ فإنّ الوَلَدَ يَشِبُّ علَيهِ .

Imam Ali (as):

Take into account who it is that suckles your children, for verily this is what a child grows on.

إنّا نأمُرُ صِبيانَنا بِالصِّيامِ إذا كانوا بَني سَبعِ سِنينَ بما أطاقُوا مِن صِيامِ اليَومِ .

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

We (i.e. Ahl al-Bayt) enjoin our children to fast when they reach the age of seven as much as they can bear it.

إنّ اللّهَ عَزَّ و جلَّ لَيَرحَمُ العَبدَ لِشِدَّةِ حُبِّهِ لِوَلَدِهِ .

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

Verily Allah, Mighty and Exalted, has mercy on a servant because of his strong love for his child.

عنه صلى الله عليه و آله ـ في رجُلٍ قالَ : ما قَبَّلتُ صَبِيّا قَطُّ ، فلَمّا ولَّى قالَ ـ : هذا رجُلٌ عِندي أنّهُ مِن أهلِ النّارِ .

The Prophet Muhammad (S):

The Prophet (s), with regard to a man who stated [proudly], 'I have never kissed a child', said after he had left, 'To me this man is one of the people of Hell.'

The Prophet Muhammad (S):

Were it not for the praying servants of Allah, the young suckling children, and the grazing animals, punishment would pour down on you.

في وَصِيَّتِه لِابنِه الحَسَنِ عليه السلام: إنَّما قَلبُ الحَدَثِ كالأرضِ الخالِيَةِ ما القِيَ فيها مِن شَي‏ءٍ قَبِلَتهُ، فبادَرتُكَ بِالأدَبِ قَبلَ أن يَقسُوَ قَلبُكَ، ويَشتَغِلَ لُبُّكَ.

Imam Ali (as):

Imam Ali (AS) said in his will to his son, al-Hasan (AS), ‘Verily the heart of a youngster is like an empty plot of land - it accepts whatever is planted therein. This is why I have started to teach you good manners before your heart is hardened and your soul is preoccupied.'

مَثَلُ الّذي يَتَعلّمُ في صِغَرهِ كَالنَّقْشِ في الحَجَرِ، وَ مَثَلُ الّذي يَتَعلّمُ في كِبَرِهِ كَالّذي يَكتُبُ على الماءِ.

The Prophet Muhammad (S):

The similitude of one who learns in his childhood is like carving on stone, whereas the similitude of one who learns in old age is like writing on water.
