Hadiths Of Wishing For Death

رسول الله (صلی الله علیه و آله):

لا يَتَمنّى أحَدُكُمُ المَوتَ لِضُرٍّنَزَلَ بهِ، فإن كانَ ولابُدَّ فاعِلًا فلْيَقُل: اللّهُمّ أحيِني ما كانَتِ الحَياةُ خَيرا لي، وتَوَفَّني إذا كانَتِ الوَفاةُ خَيرا لي.

The Prophet Muhammad (S):

None of you should pray for death if harm afflicts him, rather he should say, O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is good for me, and take me away when death is better for me.

الإمام علي (عليه السَّلام):

لمّا سُئلَ عنِ الاستِعدادِ للمَوتِ: أداءُ الفَرائضِ، واجتِنابُ المَحارِمِ، والاشتِمالُ علَى المَكارِمِ، ثُمّ لايُبالي أوَقَعَ علَى المَوتِ أم وَقَعَ المَوتُ علَيهِ. واللّهِ، مايُبالي ابنُ أبي طالبٍ أوَقَعَ علَى المَوتِ أم وَقَعَ المَوتُ علَيهِ.

Imam Ali (as):

Imam Ali (AS), when asked about preparing for death, said, [It is to] Fulfil obligations, refrain from the forbidden and adopt good moral traits, and then to not care whether one should fall onto death or death should fall onto him. By Allah, the son of Abu Talib is not concerned whether he falls onto death or death falls onto him.

بادِروا المَوتَ و غَمَراتِهِ، و امهَدوا لَهُ قبلَ حُلُولِهِ، و أعِدُّوا لَهُ قبلَ نُزولِهِ.

Imam Ali (as):

Get ready for death and its difficulties, plan for it before it comes, and prepare for it before it descends.

عَجِبتُ لمَن يَرى أنّهُ يُنقَصُ كلَّ يَومٍ في نفسِهِ و عُمرِهِ و هُو لا يَتَأهَّبُ للمَوتِ!

Imam Ali (as):

I am surprised at the one who sees his lifespan decreasing and his body getting older every day but still does not prepare for death.

الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):

ذِكرُ المَوتِ يُميتُ الشَّهَواتِ في النَّفسِ، ويَقلَعُ مَنابِتَ الغَفلَةِ، ويُقَوّي القلبَ بمَواعِدِ اللّهِ، ويُرِقُّ الطَّبعَ، ويَكسِرُ أعلامَ الهَوى ويُطفِئُ نارَ الحِرصِ، ويُحَقِّرُ الدُّنيا.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

The remembrance of death kills the desires in the self and uproots the sources of inattentiveness. It strengthens the heart about Allah s promises, softens one s attitude, breaks the pillars of inclinations, extinguishes the fire of greed, and it degrades the world.

يا بُنيَّ، أكثِرْ مِن ذِكرِ المَوتِ، و ذِكرِ ما تَهجُمُ علَيهِ و تُفضي بعدَ المَوتِ إلَيهِ، حتّى يأتيَكَ و قد أخَذتَ مِنهُ حِذرَكَ و شَدَدتَ لَه أزرَكَ، و لا يَأتيَكَ بَغتَةً فيَبهَرَكَ.

Imam Ali (as):

O my son, remember death very much and the place where you have to go suddenly and reach after death, so that when it comes you are already on your guard against it and have prepared yourself for it and it does not come to you all of a sudden and surprise you.

يَعيشُ النّاسُ بإحسانِهِم أكثرَ مِمّا يَعيشُونَ بأعمارِهِم، و يَموتُونَ بذُنوبِهِم أكثرَ مِمّا يَموتُونَ بآجالِهِم.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

People live by their goodness towards others more than they do according to their [predestined] life terms; they also die due to their sins more than they die due to the end of their term
