Hadiths Of Interpretation of Piety

رسول الله (صلی الله علیه و آله):

الوَرَعُ سَيِّدُ العَمَلِ، مَن لَم يَكُن لَهُ وَرَعٌ يَرُدُّهُ عَن مَعصيَةِ اللّهِ تعالى إذا خَلا بها لَم يَعبَأِ اللّهُ بسائرِ عَمَلِهِ، فذلكَ مَخافَةُ اللّهِ في السِّرِّ والعَلانِيَةِ، والاقتِصادُ في الفَقرِ والغِنى، والعَدلُ عِندَ الرِّضاوالسُّخطِ.

The Prophet Muhammad (S):

Piety is the master of action. He who does not have piety to prevent him from an act of disobedience to Allah Almighty when left with it, Allah will not care about any of his other actions. This means that it [piety] is fear of Allah, both in secret and in public, economizing both in poverty and wealth, and fairness both in [times of] contentment and discontentment.

الإمام السّجاد (عليه السَّلام):

الوَرَعُ نِظامُ العِبادَةِ، فإذا انقَطَعَ ذَهَبَتِ الدِّيانَةُ؛ كما إذا انقَطَعَ السِّلكُ أتبَعَهُ النِّظامُ.

Imam al-Sajjad (as):

Piety is the structure of worship, and if it is cut, religion will collapse just like when a wire is cut the system follows it!

لَيسَ مِنّا ولا كَرامَةَ مَن كانِ فِي مِصرٍ فيهِ مِائةُ ألفٍ أو يَزيدونَ، وكانَ في ذلكَ المِصرِ أحَدٌ أورَعَ مِنهُ.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

He who lives in a place with a population of one hundred thousand or more and there is in that place someone more pious than him, then he is not [considered] one of us.

علَيكُم بِالوَرَعِ؛ فإنّهُ الدِّينُ الّذي نُلازِمُهُ، ونَدينُ اللّهَ بِهِ، ونُريدُهُ مِمَّن يُوالِينا.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

You must have piety; for it is the religion that we adhere to, and with which we devote ourselves to Allah, and we require it from those who accept our guardianship.

مَن أحَبَّنا فلْيَعمَلْ بعَمَلِنا ولْيَستَعِنْ بِالوَرَعِ؛ فإنّهُ أفضَلُ ما يُستَعانُ بهِ في أمرِ الدُّنيا والآخِرَةِ

Imam Ali (as):

He who loves us should do as we do, and seek assistance in piety; for it is the best assistance in matters of this world and the Hereafter.
