Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as): Test a friend with three things; if he possesses them, then he is indeed a genuine friend, otherwise, he will only befriend you in times of comfort and abandon you in times of trouble: [See if you can] ask him for money, or entrust him with your property, or if he stands by your side in your distress.
