Refrain from [treading] a path when there is a fear of straying in it.

Stopping when faced with the confusion of falling astray is better than riding dangerous paths.

God-wariness is the remedy for the sickness of your hearts, the sight for the blindness of your hearts, the cure for the sickness of your bodies, the reformation of the corruption of your chests [souls], the purification of the filth of your souls, the enlightenment of the blindness of your eyes, the safety for the fear of your anxiety, and the light to the blackness of your darkness.

Verily the most evil of people in the sight of Allah is the tyrannical leader who himself has gone astray and through whom others go astray. He abolishes established practices and revives abandoned innovations.


Verily this Qur'an is the adviser that never deceives, the guide that never leads astray and the narrator that never lies.

Be on your guard against the obscure matter, for verily it has been set down in order to test people [ or lead people astray].

Seek its assistance [i.e. the Qur’an’s] in your distress, for verily it contains the cure for the deadliest diseases, namely disbelief and hypocrisy, revolt and misguidance.

Knowledge without action is a curse, and action without knowledge is straying in error.

Look at the household of your Prophet and adhere to their direction…Do not overtake them, for then you will stray, nor lag behind them lest you fall into ruin.

I advise you to keep away from desires, for desires instigate blindness, and it is straying both in the Hereafter and in this world.

Visit each other for verily your visits revive your own hearts and act as a reminder of our traditions, and our traditions in turn awaken affection in you towards each other. If you adopt our traditions you shall be rightly guided and shall attain salvation, and if you abandon them you will stray and perish, so do adopt them and I will guarantee your salvation.

I fear three things for my community: deviation after awareness, the misleading temptations, and the desires of the stomach and the private parts.

Blessed be the one who obeys an adviser who guides him, and avoids a deviant person who misleads him.

Every friendship which is based on anything other than God is astraying/ error and reliance upon it is impossible/ sensible.


Imam al-Sadiq (AS) was once asked regarding the Prophet (s)’s saying, ‘Looking at the faces of scholars is an act of worship’, to which he replied, ‘It refers to the scholar looking at whom reminds you of the Hereafter, and whoever is not thus, then looking at him is a trial.’

He who does not increase in guidance in spite of an increase in his knowledge only gets further away from Allah.


Whoever establishes a good habitual practice that people follow even after him, he will get his own reward for it as well as the like of their reward for performing it, without any decrease in their reward thereof.
