My intercession is intended for those who have committed grave sins [from among the Muslims], except for those guilty of polytheism and injustice to others.



Certainly the most dreadful thing I fear for you is the lesser polytheism. They asked, And what is the lesser polytheism, O Messenger of Allah? He (s) replied, It is showing off (riya).

Verily the Umayyads used to allow the teaching of faith to people but did not permit polytheism to be taught and clarified, so that when it came to their converting them [the people] to it, they would not be able to recognize it.


Know that even the slightest showing off is tantamount to polytheism.

Wisdom is the lost property of the believer, so seek it even from the polytheist for you will be more deserving and worthier of it [than him].


There are two virtues unexcelled by anything good: faith in Allah, and being of benefit to Allah's servants. And there are two iniquities unsurpassed by anything evil: associating partners with Allah, and causing harm to Allah's servants.


Allah obligated faith as purification from polytheism, and prayer as a deterrent from arrogance.

Every act of showing off is tantamount to polytheism. Verily whoever acts for people [and not Allah] the reward of his act will be upon people. [he should not expect any reward from Allah.]


After idol-worship, I have not been prohibited from anything as significantly as I have been prohibited from hostility towards people.

Whoever associates with an Imam chosen by Allah someone whose leadership is not endorsed by Allah, is as though he has ascribed a partner to Allah.


Iblis [Satan] addresses his troops saying, 'Sow jealousy and aggression between them, for verily these are tantamount to polytheism in the sight of Allah.
