رسول الله (صلی الله علیه و آله):
ما أقبَحَ الفَقرَ بَعدَ الغِنى، و أقبَحَ الخَطيئَةَ بَعدَ المَسكَنَةِ ! وَ أقبَحُ مِن ذلِكَ العابِدُ للّهِِ ثُمّ يَدَعُ عِبادَتَهُ .
The Prophet Muhammad (S):
How awful it is to become poor after being rich, to be drawn to wrong after destitution, but worse than that is when the worshipper of Allah abandons His worship.

رسول الله (صلی الله علیه و آله):
طُوبى لِلمَساكينِ بالصَّبرِ ، و هُمُ الّذينَ يَرَونَ مَلَكوتَ السَّماواتِ و الأرضِ.
The Prophet Muhammad (S):
Blessed are the needy for their patience, and they are the ones who will see the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth.

الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):
مَيَاسِيرُ شِيعَتِنَا أُمَنَاؤُنَا عَلَی مَحَاوِيجِهِمْ فَاحْفَظُونَا فِيهِمْ يَحْفَظْكُمُ اللَّهُ.
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
The rich ones from among our Shi'a are our trustees regarding the poor ones among them, so observe our right regarding them [be charitable towards them] and Allah will protect you.

الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):
لا فَقْرَ أَشَدُّ مِنَ الْجَهْلِ،وَ لَا مَالَ أَعْوَدُ مِنَ الْعَقْلِ.

There is no poverty more severe than ignorance, and there is no wealth more profiting than the intellect.

الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):
في مُناجاةِ موسى عليه السلام : يا موسى ، إذا رَأَيتَ الفَقرَ مُقبِلاً فَقُل : مَرحَبا بِشِعارِ الصّالِحينَ ، و إذا رَأَيتَ الغِنى مُقبِلاً فَقُل : ذَنبٌ عُجِّلَت عُقوبَتُهُ.
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Allah said in an intimate conversation with Moses (as), 'O Moses, when you see poverty coming, then say to it, 'Welcome O garment of the righteous', and when you see wealth coming, say, 'A sin whose punishment has been hastened.'

There are two groups of traditions when it comes to poverty and richness, one praising poverty and disparaging richness and the other describing poverty as something that brings man closer to disbelief and considering wealth to be the best aid for building one's Hereafter. So it must be noted here that when poverty is praised it is referring to a kind of poverty that makes man feel closer to and more in need of God and saves him from heedlessness, and the disparaged wealth is one that gradually takes man to the pit of heedlessness making him overstep all bounds, as God says in the Quran: 'No! [But] indeed, man transgresses, when he finds himself free from want.';

كادَ الفَقرُ أن يَكونَ كُفرا.

الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):
لمّا سُئلَ عمّا يُروى عن أبي ذَرٍّ: ثلاثةٌ يُبغِضُها الناسُ وأنا احِبُّها: احِبُّ المَوتَ واحِبُّ الفَقرَ واحِبُّ البَلاءَ: إنّ هذا ليس على ما يَرَونَ؛ إنّما عَنى: المَوتُ في طاعَةِ اللّهِ أحَبُّ إلَيَّ مِن الحَياةِ في مَعصيَةِ اللّهِ، والفَقرُ في طاعةِ اللّهِ أحَبُّ إليَّ مِن الغِنى يمَعصيَةِ اللّهِ، والبَلاءُ في طاعَهِ اللّهِ أحَبُ إلَيَّ مِن الصِّحَّةِ في مَعصيَةِ اللّهِ.
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Imam al-Sadiq (AS), when asked about the [meaning of the] saying of Abu Dharr: "There are three things that people hate but I love: I love death and I love poverty and I love tribulation", said, 'This is not as they have understood it. What he meant is that death in the obedience of Allah is more beloved to me than a life of disobedience to Allah; poverty in the obedience of Allah is more beloved to me than wealth [accompanied] with disobedience to Allah, and tribulation [accompanied] with obedience to Allah is more beloved to me than good health with disobedience to Allah.'
