The Prophet Muhammad (S):
The Holy Quran is guidance against straying, clarification against blindness, stability against wavering, light against darkness, brightness in incidents, protection against destruction, the right course in every deviation, clear statement against mischief. It delivers one from this [lowly] world to [the prosperity of] the Hereafter. In it there lies the perfection of your religion. Whoever turns away from the Quran is headed to the fire.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
Stopping in the face of an obscure matter is better than plunging headlong into disaster.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Do not relegate your soul to its desire, for its desire leads your soul to destruction; leaving your soul to its desire is what inflicts torment on it, whereas restraining it from its desire is the remedy for your soul.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Regarding the words of Allah: “We will gradually draw them near (to destruction) whence they know not.”, Imam al-Sadiq (as) said, 'This is about a person who commits sins, and thus is given more bounties, and those bounties distract him from seeking forgiveness for the sin.'

Istidraj is when a person who is persistent in sinning, is heedless and does not thank Allah for His bounties, is given what he desires of worldly enjoyments. Such a person is being gradually driven to God's punishment as a result of his own wrongdoings, his heedlessness and his lack of thankfulness to God. So as long as a person is mindful of God's favors upon him and makes sure to thank God for them, he will not be subject to the Sunnah of Istidraj. ;

Imam Ali (as):
Just as iron is covered with rust until it is totally consumed, likewise, jealousy torments the body until it destroys it.
