Imam Ali (as):
[Balanced] Speech is between two attributes of badness, which are: excessive and too little [speech]; too much is prattle and too little is stammering and hesitation.

The Prophet Muhammad (S):
No speech holds any value unless it is accompanied by action, and the speech and action are worthless unless they are performed with a sincere intention, and the action and the intention are of no value unless they are according to the Sunnah [the prophetic practice].

The Prophet Muhammad (S):
[On the Day of Resurrection] God will punish the tongue with a punishment which He will not inflict upon any other limbs. The tongue will say, 'O Lord, why did you punish me with a punishment such as You have not punished anything? It will be said to it, 'Because a word was uttered by you that reached the west and the east, on account of which [someone's] blood was shed without a just cause, [someone's] property was looted unrightfully, and [someone's] honour was tarnished unjustly.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
Abu Zar used to day, 'O seeker of knowledge, verily this tongue is the key to both good and evil, so set a seal on your tongue just as you set a seal on your gold and your money.

:
Do not speak a lot about matters other than God's remembrance, for the hearts of those who speak a lot without remembering God become hardened even though they do not realize it.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
A believing servant of God is recorded as a good-doer as long as he keeps silent, but once he speaks he will be recorded either as a good-doer or as a wrong-goer [depending on what he says].
