Individual Ethics » Virtues » Controlling One’s Anger » What are the ways of perfecting one’s faith?

There are three things that perfects one’s faith: when one is content, they will never allow their contentment to lead them astray, when one gets angry, their anger will not take them away from the truth, and when one gains power, they will not seize what does not belong to them.

This hadith does not mean that faith is restricted to these three characteristics; rather, it suggests that possessing these characteristics indicates one has already acquired all aspects of faith. This is because each of them is based on a set of virtues and thus indicative of them.
A person’s happiness and love must not lead them to falsity or allow them to defend someone else unjustly. Also, one’s anger must not lead them to behave wrongly and go astray.
It is narrated that Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) has said:
Anger will destroy the heart of a wise person, and whoever has no control over their anger will have no control over their reason.
If a wise person who does things based on wisdom, thought, and contemplation gets angry, then the foundation of their wisdom will fall to ruins. In short, anger and wrath are difficult tests that afflict human beings. When one’s anger blazes out of control, it destroys all values inside them, even the values of wisdom and reason.
Also, if they gain power, they must not utilise this power to commit something that they do not have a right to do. If the goal of power is to obtain material benefits, such power will be the greatest burden a person can have. Those who want power and position for their own benefits, filling their pockets and pursuing their own worldly interests, they will not be able to work for the interest of the people when it comes to their interests conflicting with the interests of the people. Albeit, power in itself is neither a blessing nor a misfortune. If this power is used for the sake of God and for serving people, it will be a blessing, but if it is for material gain and to fulfill human desires, it will be a misfortune.
