The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "O servant of Allah! Love for the sake of Allah and hate for the sake of Allah, and befriend for the sake of Allah and contest (oppose) for the sake of Allah, for Allah's guardianship is attained only by that." This hadith establishes a fundamental principle of Islamic spirituality: aligning our emotions, relationships, and loyalties with Allah's will. This hadith clarifies that association and disassociation in Islam should be for the sake of Allah. 1. Love for the Sake of Allah Meaning: To love people, acts, or things because Allah loves them. This includes loving righteous individuals, scholars, believers, and virtuous deeds because they bring one closer to Allah. It also means desiring good for others, praying for their guidance, and supporting them in their righteous endeavors. 2. Hate for the Sake of Allah Meaning: Dislike what Allah dislikes: injustice, oppression, disbelief, hypocrisy, and sin. This is not personal hatred, but rather a principled disapproval of evil actions. Even when we "hate" an evil act, we pray for the guidance and repentance of the wrongdoer. 3. Befriend for the Sake of Allah (Wilayah): Meaning: Form alliances, friendships, and loyalty based on faith, not worldly interests. This creates a supportive community of believers that strengthens everyone's faith. 4. Contest for the Sake of Allah (Adawah): Meaning: Stand firm against injustice, corruption, and opposition to divine truth, but do so justly and sincerely. This includes resisting negative influences and systems that divert believers from God's guidance. 5. Attaining Allah's Guardianship The Prophet (PBUH) concludes by saying: "Allah's guardianship (wilayah) is attained only by that." This means that one cannot truly be under Allah's care, protection, and friendship unless one's loves, hates, loyalties, and struggles are aligned with Him. Practical Lesson: This hadith teaches that faith is not only about performing rituals; it is also about shaping one's heart so that one loves what Allah loves. We love what Allah loves, We dislike what Allah dislikes. We form bonds with those who bring us closer to Allah. We oppose what distances us from Him. Following this path leads to becoming a true servant of Allah and receiving His special protection, guidance, and closeness.
