Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Keep your soul away from what harms it before it departs your body, and struggle to set it free [from desire] just as you struggle to earn your livelihood, for verily your soul is hostage to your deed.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Worshippers is of three types: some people worship God out of fear, and that is the worship of slaves; other people worship God seeking reward, and that is the worship of hirelings; and some people worship God out of love for Him, and that is the worship of those who are free, and that is the most excellent worship.

Imam Ali (as):
Certainly, God-wariness is the key to guidance, provision for the next world, freedom from every slavery and deliverance from all ruin. With its help the seeker succeeds and a runaway is saved, and wishes are acquired.

Imam Ali (as):
This world is a transitory place and not a permanent one. The people therein are of two types, the man who has sold his self [to his passions] and thus ruined it, and the man who has purchased his self [by control against his passions] and thus freed it.

Imam Ali (as):
Through self-sacrifice do free people become enslaved. (If you put others before yourself, they will become so enamoured by your character and your conduct that they will treat you with humility and obedience like a slave is humble towards his master.
