Imam al-Kazim (as):
Self-admiration [‘Ujb] has stages, some of which are: when a person’s evil deed is made to seem fair to him so he views it as good and is impressed by it and thinks that he is doing well. [Another stage is] when a person comes to believe in his Lord and considers it a favour to Allah, Mighty and Exalted, while it is Allah who has done him a favour [by guiding him to faith].

Imam al-Kazim (as):
Do not regard a great deal of good that you do as too much and do not deem your petty sins as insignificant, for verily petty sins accumulate until they become a great deal. Have fear of Allah in private so you can maintain fairness despite yourselves, hasten towards obedience to your Lord, be truthful in your speech, return the trust [to its owner], for verily that is for your own good, and do not engage in that which is not lawful, for it is in your own detriment.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
I asked Imam al-Sadiq (as) about the state of a man who commits a sin on account of which he becomes fearful and apprehensive [of its consequences], then he performs a good deed which makes him impressed with himself. The Imam replied: 'The first state where he is fearful for his sin is better than the one where he feels impressed with himself.'

The Prophet Muhammad (S):
Moses (as) was once sitting down when Iblis [Satan] approached him ... Moses asked him, 'So inform me about the sin which if the son of Adam were to commit would give you mastery over him.' He replied, 'It is when he feels proud of himself, overrates his good deeds, and deems his sin insignificant.'
