الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):

يَا جَابِرُ، أَ يَكْتَفِي‏ مَنْ يَنْتَحِلُ‏ التَّشَيُّعَ أَنْ يَقُولَ بِحُبِّنَا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ؟ فَوَ اللَّهِ مَا شِيعَتُنَا إِلَّا مَنِ اتَّقَى اللَّهَ وَ أَطَاعَهُ، وَ مَا كَانُوا يُعْرَفُونَ يَا جَابِرُ إِلَّا بِالتَّوَاضُعِ، وَ التَّخَشُّعِ، وَ الْأَمَانَةِ، وَ كَثْرَةِ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ، وَ الصَّوْمِ‏، وَ الصَّلَاةِ، وَ الْبِرِّ بِالْوَالِدَيْنِ‏، وَ التَّعَاهُدِ لِلْجِيرَانِ‏ مِنَ الْفُقَرَاءِ وَ أَهْلِ الْمَسْكَنَةِ وَ الْغَارِمِينَ وَ الْأَيْتَامِ، وَ صِدْقِ الْحَدِيثِ، وَ تِلَاوَةِ الْقُرْآنِ، وَ كَفِّ الْأَلْسُنِ عَنِ‏ النَّاسِ إِلَّا مِنْ خَيْرٍ، وَ كَانُوا أُمَنَاءَ عَشَائِرِهِمْ فِي الْأَشْيَاءِ.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

O Jabir, does one who claims to be our shi'a think it suffices him to say that he loves us Ahl al-Bayt? By Allah, our Shi'a are only those who are wary of Allah and obey Him and are known for their humility and fear of Allah and trustworthiness and frequent remembrance of Allah and fasting and praying and goodness towards their parents and caring for their poor neighbors and the destitute and those in debt, and truthfulness and recitation of the Qur'an, and restraining their tongues from mentioning people except with goodness, and being trusted among their people with their possessions.

Abū Jaʿfar, Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb b. Isḥāq al-Kulaynī Al-Rāzī (Arabic: ابوجعفر، محمّد بن یعقوب بن اسحاق الرازی) (c. 255/868-9 - 329/941) was among the greatest Shi'a hadith scholars and the author of al-Kafi, the most authentic Shi'a hadith collection and one the Four Books. He was born after the martyrdom of Imam al-'Askari (a), at the time of Imam al-Mahdi (a) and met some hadith transmitters who directly had heard hadiths from Imam al-Hadi (a) and Imam al-'Askari (a). It is said that al-Kulayni was very accurate in transmitting hadiths. Ibn Qulawayh, Muhammad b. Ali Majilawayh al-Qummi, Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Zurari were among his students.
