The Prophet Muhammad (S):
Among the symptoms of wretchedness are: a look of apathy in the eyes, hardness of the heart, intense greed in seeking out one's livelihood, and persistence in committing sins.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
Every single person has a white spot on his heart, and when he commits a sin, a black dot appears in the white spot, so if he repents, the black dot disappears, but if he continues to indulge in sins, the black dot expands until it engulfs the white spot and when that happens, he will never return to good and that is the purport of God's verse in the Quran: "...No, that is not the case! Rather, their hearts have been sullied by what they have been earning."

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
When a man commits a sin, a black spot appears on his heart. If he repents, it is effaced, but if he continues committing it, the spot increases and grows until it engulfs the whole heart, after which he can never again prosper.

Imam Ali (as):
Pitiable indeed is every negligent person that his whole life can be used as evidence against him and that his days lead him to wretchedness!
