الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):
لمّا قالَ لَهُ قائلٌ : سَألتُ اللّهَ أن يَرزُقَني مالاً و ولدا و دارا فرَزَقَني ، و قد خِفتُ أن يكونَ ذلكَ استِدراجا ـ : أما و اللّهِ مَعَ الحَمدِ فلا .
A man said to Imam al-Sadiq (as), I asked Allah to give me wealth, children, and a house and my prayer was answered, but I fear that it might be a means to gradually draw me near to Allah’s punishment (i.e. Istidraj). The Imam replied, By Allah, it is not so if followed by thanksgiving on your part.

Istidraj is when a person who is persistent in sinning, is heedless and does not thank Allah for His bounties, is given what he desires of worldly enjoyments and all these enjoyments distract him from seeking forgiveness. Such a person is being gradually driven to God's punishment as a result of his own wrongdoings, his heedlessness and his lack of thankfulness to God. So as long as a person is mindful of God's favors upon him and makes sure to thank God for them, he will not be subject to the Sunnah of Istidraj.

Abū Jaʿfar, Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb b. Isḥāq al-Kulaynī Al-Rāzī (Arabic: ابوجعفر، محمّد بن یعقوب بن اسحاق الرازی) (c. 255/868-9 - 329/941) was among the greatest Shi'a hadith scholars and the author of al-Kafi, the most authentic Shi'a hadith collection and one the Four Books. He was born after the martyrdom of Imam al-'Askari (a), at the time of Imam al-Mahdi (a) and met some hadith transmitters who directly had heard hadiths from Imam al-Hadi (a) and Imam al-'Askari (a). It is said that al-Kulayni was very accurate in transmitting hadiths. Ibn Qulawayh, Muhammad b. Ali Majilawayh al-Qummi, Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Zurari were among his students.
