Imam al-Reḍa (as):
I said to Imam al-Ridha (as), Can I pray for my parents who do not know the right course [they are not Shia]? The Imam said, Pray for them and give charity on their behalf [if they are dead], and if they are alive and do not know the right course then be tolerant with them, as the prophet said, Verily Allah sent me with [the message of] mercy, not with insolence [to one's parents].
